about

To celebrate the release of sneaky jesus' debut LP For Joseph Riddle, Shapes of Rhythm decided to reach out to a host of producers for reinterpretations. This is the first of remixes from the project.
First on the list of producers the label wanted to approach was Chris Menist AKA Awkward Corners.

Having released his acclaimed Dislocation Songs LP for the label amidst the first lockdown of 2020, Chris went on to remix Emanative & Bex Burch's Disrupt #4 which drew brilliant reactions across the board. Chris takes on Battledance, For Joseph Riddle's percussion-heavy, psychy jam. Using a number of instruments from around the world, he throws in his trademark Illimbas, a Berimbau as well as more familiar booming 808s.

sneaky jesus were formed in 2019 at a jam session in Zion, a former squat in Wrocław (Poland). There, three of the group’s members: Matylda Gerber (sax), Maciej Forreiter (guitar) and Filip Baczyński (drums) met. At first their musical relationship was loose. They were meeting at various jam sessions with no real intent of forming a group. But as they got to know each other's musical abilities the idea of a band seemed more tempting. Only a bass player was missing who would anchor the whole band. They found this anchor in Beniamin Łasiewicki.

In April 2019 the quartet was formed under the sneaky jesus moniker. Their early work strongly reflected their jam oriented beginnings. First gigs were very spontaneous, sometimes booked only a day in advance. sneaky jesus debuted live in Wrocław Botanical Garden and carried on playing many open air gigs throughout the summer. At the same time they earned a residency at Tamka Island Art Hub alongside established local artists: Młyn, Gaijin Blues and Torteks. The Hub became a recording space for the group’s debut single Dungeon Sessions and a permanent working space for the next year and a half. During the colder part of 2019 and 2020 the quartet started to play local clubs such as: Uczulenie, DK Luksus and legendary Kalambur.

In the spring of 2020 the global pandemic put live music in Poland on hold, so the group focused on mixing the second single Groove From Hell. Also at this time debut LP For Joseph Riddle was composed and arranged and temporary line up changes brought Mariano De Ona Martinez to the band. At first as a substitute bassist and in the end as the affiliate pianist and synth wizard. sneaky jesus were eager to widen their sound pallet so two more affiliate musicians were invited to join the For Joseph Riddle sessions: Wiktor Maternik supplied Donald Byrd-esque, hard bop trumpet and Michał Sczepaniec came in with his tribal inspired percussion rhythms. Also at that time the ban of live performances was temporarily lifted so the group had a chance to play the new material live.

They performed at Tamka Island Art Hub, Podwodny Wrocław Festival, Avant-Art Festival (which is one of the top independent art events in Poland) and Odra Pany where they were one of the first live acts to play this DJ dominated venue. Unfortunately the ban was quickly reinstated and the last live performance to date was at a Miasto Movie (major Polish Film Festival) afterparty, alongside avant-garde group Przepych. Shortly after the sessions at Tower Studio (Wrocław) started with Kuba Kutera, a skilled engineer and an established musician
